Drills To Prepare For And Expect At Tryouts

Updated: Jul 4, 2019

So your player has picked a team, and they're practicing their jump shot and free throws - which is good - but what else should they be prepared for?

Below I have listed THE MOST COMMON drills at tryouts that are not normally things a player practices. Take a look through, your player will almost certainly have to do these drills or some variation on them, and they're not the easiest when you're new.

2 Ball Dribbling Drill

2 ball dribbling drills are very common at rep basketball tryouts. They tend to stay at the more basic level when the players are young, and get more difficult the older or more advanced the team is. If this is your players' first year, get a second ball and get them running these drills in the weeks leading up to tryouts.

3 Man Weave Drill

Another very common drill at rep basketball tryouts is the 3 man weave. It involves a run up the court with a series of passes and players weaving around one another to specific spots to get into position for the next pass. The final player in the run completes it with a layup. Check out the video below for a very clear breakdown of how it's run.

Your player will need friends, siblings and parents to help in practicing this as it requires 3 players.

Sometimes it start with a set number of passes, ie 5, and then works down to 3.

3 on 3 or 5 on 5 No Dribble Drill

Like the 3 man weave drill, the no dribble drill forces players to make quick decisions, and allows the coaches to see your player's court vision, decision making, play making and much more.

Like the 3 man weave, this is one your player will need some friends to run with, but it can even be without opponents, or you can step in to run D. The key is to become familiar with what to do to get the ball up the court without putting it on the floor while under pressure.
