Learning to Dunk

Updated: Aug 4, 2019

Everyone wants to cross someone out, deliver a devastating block, make a behind the back no look pass or drain the 3 effortlessly. But the number one dream for many is to one day dunk the ball.

Some feel doubtful because of their height, and that is a factor in the ease of dunking for sure, but considering that Spud Webb dunked at 5'7, you may want to reconsider the notion that only 6 footers can dunk.

For many, learning to dunk will take time and practice. This page will be filled with videos that offer training to get you ready for your first dunk.

With so many videos, books, websites providing different and in some cases wrong information on how to improve your vertical jump, it can be difficult to separate the high quality information from the weaker quality advice.

And of course, every player is different. Some start with a height benefit, others have the hops to compensate, while others will need to get enough speed and explosive power from their move to the hoop to get it done.

I like a a little science with my sports, so I've included below a very entertaining and informative video from ESPN Sports Science. In it, you'll see Dwight Howard attempting to beat Shaq's 12'5 vertical reach. They have him hooked up to some equipment that allows them to assess the how many pounds of force he pushes off with and how many watts of energy he produces in his leap.

The "trick" to improving your vertical can be found in physics.

But before learning the finesse of trajectory and converting velocity and strength into power, you'll need to get some workouts in to improve those factors.

This video will provide you with some great basic training from Coach Andy to improve your vertical. Getting the foundation laid right will make the path to your first dunk a lot easier.

Committing to basic training to improve aspects of a move will make it easier when its time to put those pieces together.
